Understanding Dermatology Part II
Cosmetic procedures
Dermatology acne treatment may include cosmetic procedures performed by a dermatologist. Comedo extraction is the removal of blackheads and whitehead using a sterile instrument. As many teenagers have been told, squeezing of pimples can inflame the skin, lead to further infection and contribute to scarring. Comedo extraction in a dermatologist’s office will be performed under sterile conditions and should not contribute to the development of an infection.
Drainage and extraction may be performed by a dermatologist to eliminate cysts and nodules that have not responded to medication. Cysts and nodules deep under the skin are often painful and must be removed under surgical conditions. Acne surgery may also be combined with direct injection of a corticosteroid into the lesion.
Chemical Peels
Chemical peels are most often used for the treatment of acne scars and signs of aging but can be useful for some types of acne. Chemical peels using glycolic acid and hydroxy acids may be used to treat superficial acne. Stronger
agents such as trichloroactic acid or phenol may be used to affect deeper skin layers. Chemical peels will destroy the top layers of the skin, causing it to slough off. After treatment, the skin may be red, dry and irritated and may
take several days or weeks to completely heal.
Phototherapy
Sunlight has long been thought to reduce acne occurrence though sun tanning is no longer recommended due to the risk of skin cancer. Regular exposure to ultra violet light under medical supervision may be used to reduce bacteria that contribute to acne. Laser therapy may be used to treat deep into the skin tissue without harming the surface. Laser therapy is thought to reduce oil production from the sebaceous glands.
Whether a person has a mild case of acne or more severe polycystic acne there is an answer to nearly any type of condition. A careful, regular skin care program using gentle cleansing methods should be undertaken along with any
treatment regimen.
Healthy, clear skin – free of acne can be achieved and through dermatology acne treatment, will help prevent future scarring and disfigurement.
